What to Wear for Your Photo Session:
Style Tips for Every Occasion
When it comes to preparing for a photo session, the biggest question I hear isn’t “What time should we arrive?” or “How do I bribe my toddler to smile?” Nope—it’s almost always, “What should we wear?!”
Let’s face it: outfit planning can feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while blindfolded. But don’t worry—I’ve got you covered with some simple, stress-free tips to help you nail your look and feel confident when the camera clicks.
1. Coordinate, Don’t Clone
Matching outfits might sound cute in theory, but head-to-toe plaid on the whole family? It’s giving lumberjack convention vibes. Instead, aim for coordinated colors and complementary tones. Think of your family’s outfits like a group text: everyone gets their say, but the messages still flow together.
For example, warm tones (like rust, mustard, or cream) work beautifully for fall sessions, while pastels and light neutrals shine in the spring. Keep everyone in the same color family, and you’re golden!
2. Avoid Distracting Patterns
We love a bold floral print… until it starts a fight with the background. Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns for a timeless look. If one person is rocking a print, balance it out with solid colors on everyone else. Remember: you want you to be the focus of the photo, not your polka-dot blouse yelling louder than the kids.
3. Layer It Up!
Layers are your best friend. Not only do they add visual interest, but they also give you options if the weather pulls one of its classic “guess what I’m doing today!” stunts. Think jackets, scarves, or cardigans that you can take on and off to mix up the look. Bonus: layers = pockets for snacks. You’re welcome, parents.
4. Dress for the Occasion
Consider the vibe you want for your photos. Are you going for cozy and casual? Think jeans, boots, and sweaters. A polished, formal look? Break out the dresses, slacks, and blazers. The more comfortable and “you” your outfits feel, the more natural you’ll look in the photos. Also, if your session involves running after toddlers or hiking to a scenic overlook, maybe skip the stilettos.
5. Accessorize Thoughtfully
Hats, necklaces, and scarves can add a touch of flair—but don’t overdo it. One standout accessory per person is plenty. The goal is to enhance your look, not make the photo scream, “I'm trying too hard to be trendy!”
6. Avoid Logos and Graphics
T-shirts with giant logos or text might be trendy, but they can date your photos faster than you can say “Pumpkin Spice Latte.” Keep it simple and classic. Keep with the theme of your shoot, does "Just do It" make sense in your family holiday cards? Maybe not.
7. Don’t Forget About Shoes
Ah, shoes—the forgotten heroes of photo prep. Remember that they’ll show up in full-body shots, so skip the scuffed sneakers or Crocs (unless that’s your thing, in which case, rock it unapologetically!).
8. Test It Out
Try on your outfit ahead of time—especially if you’ve been shopping just for the occasion. Make sure everything fits well, is comfortable, and allows for sitting, standing, and maybe even chasing kids. (You know it’s coming.)
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the best outfit is one that makes you feel amazing. When you’re comfortable and confident, it will shine through in the photos. Trust me—your smile is your best accessory (even better than a wide-brimmed panama hat).
