Does the idea of “posing” for a photoshoot make you cringe a little? You’re not alone! Many people feel awkward or unsure when it comes to being in front of the camera. But here’s the good news: posing doesn’t have to feel stiff or uncomfortable. It’s about capturing your natural self—moments that feel authentic and true to you. With a little guidance and practice, you’ll be camera-ready in no time, and avoid a potential Chandler Bing situation (if you know, you know). Here are my top tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and absolutely radiant in front of the lens.

1. Move a Little
One of the easiest ways to ease into posing is to keep moving. Standing still in one spot can feel awkward and make you look rigid in photos. Instead, add a little movement to create a sense of natural flow. Now, we're not talking about doing the robot here, but you can take a few steps, sway gently, lean against a wall, or even spin around if the moment calls for it! Movement not only keeps you loose but also creates dynamic, candid shots that feel alive and real.
Pro Tip: Fake walking while laughing or chatting with someone is a great way to capture effortless, joyful moments.
2. Focus on Connection
For couples, families, or group photos, one of the best tricks is to focus on interacting with each other instead of the camera. Forget about posing for a second and just be together. Hold hands, share a secret, or play with the kids. These organic interactions bring out your unique relationships and result in photos filled with warmth and connection. Don't worry about looking at the camera 100% of the time. By connecting with the people around you, your pictures will be more authentic and showcase your wonderful personalities and your family dynamic.
Pro Tip: Whisper something funny or sweet to each other—this not only helps you relax but also creates genuine smiles and laughter that shine through in the images.
3. Relax Your Hands
Not sure what to do with your hands? You’re not alone—it’s one of the most common challenges in posing! The key is to avoid overthinking it. We're not taking Glamour Shots here (no offense to the 90's) so the more natural and relaxed your pose is, the better the final shot will be. You can tuck one hand into your pocket, or lightly rest your hand on your hip. If you’re with someone else, naturally place your hands on their shoulder, lock arms, hug their waist, or hold hands to convey connection. Letting your hands hang naturally at your sides is also completely fine—it’s all about staying relaxed and avoiding the awkward “hover hand” syndrome.
Pro Tip: Keep your fingers slightly loose, not stiff or clenched. Small details like this can make a big difference in how natural your pose feels.
4. Trust the Process
Posing for a photoshoot isn’t about perfection—it’s about embracing the moment and having fun with it. Whether you’re feeling camera-shy or uncertain, know that it’s perfectly normal. As your photographer, I’ll be there to guide you through every step, offering tips and adjustments to help you look and feel your best. I may ask you to stand or sit closer than you normally do in an everyday setting, just know that I'm trying to convey connection and love in every photo. Remember, the magic of a great photo isn’t just in the pose; it’s in the emotion and connection behind it. So let go of the pressure to “get it right” and focus on enjoying the experience.
Final Thoughts
The secret to looking and feeling amazing in photos is simple: be yourself. With a little movement, some genuine interaction, and a relaxed mindset, you’ll look like a natural in front of the camera. And don’t worry about knowing exactly what to do—that’s what I’m here for! No matter the reason for the photoshoot - whether we’re capturing solo portraits, couple shots, or family moments, I’ll be there to guide and support you every step of the way. Together, we’ll create photos that feel as beautiful and authentic as you are. So, take a deep breath, shake off the nerves, maybe do an impromptu booty shake to get out of your head (interpretive dance, anyone?), and let’s make some magic happen!
